Storm Kings Thunder

The Search for the Relics

The cultists flew the airship from Morgur’s Mound towards Shining White, the mound of the Griffon Tribe. When they arrived, they found the menhir’s surrounding the mound toppled and the central, marble altar pulverized. A quick search the area revealed stone giant foot prints and evidence that the destruction had occurred only a few days before. They searched the altar area and found a broken cloud giant mask buried underneath the rubble. They loaded it aboard the ship and left towards Flint Rock, the ancestral mound of the Elk Tribe.

When they arrived, they found no guardians other than a pair of massive elk quietly grazing on moss. They quickly located a mithril spear tip buried under the altar with faint traces of residual magic. They left the elk to their grazing (killing elk at the mound of the Elk Tribe would probably be a bad idea) and set sail for Grandfather Tree, deep in the High Forest.

They arrived in a large clearing with a gigantic oak tree towering over the forest canopy. A group of centaurs were there, but had had a run in with a curse and weren’t spoiling for a fight. They had come to take advantage of Grandfather Tree’s restorative powers. When the party approached the tree, however, dryads stepped out of the surrounding oak trees and demanded that they leave at once. Evrick the Warlock managed to convince them that they meant no harm and persuaded them to allow the party to search among the roots of the tree where they found a giant sized torc made of electrum. They removed the torc and, thanking the dryads, left in peace.

The ship started steering a course north for Stone Stand, ancestral mound of the Blue Bear tribe, thought to be long extinct. The ship encountered a thunderstorm on the way, and travel was slowed by driving rain and dangerous lightning. They were surprised by a young green dragon that attacked from the cover of the clouds and strafed the deck of the ship with it’s poison gas breath. It began a series of hit and run attacks, using it’s breath weapon and then hiding underneath or above the ship to prevent ranged attacks. The party managed to hit it anyway with some magics and then the dragon foolishly flew alongside the ship where Klark and Knox managed to bring it down before it could bank away. Half of the dragon culstist crew, however, were not so lucky and perished in the attack. After resting up and recovering fromt he dragon attack, they arrived at Stone Stand.

The main altar area was built around an impressive oak tree, which happened to be a cutting from Grandfather Tree. When they approached the tree, a ghostly specter of an Uthgardt chieftain came howling out of the tree and attacked. The managed to put it down, but soon after a second one appeared and attempted to possess Knox. the party began frantically digging and searching for the giant relic as two more chieftains made an appearance, attempting to possess them. they eventually found a skull of a giant and when they removed it from under the tree, the ghostly chieftains reappeared, but instead of attacking, dissipated in a flash of bright light…their souls finally freed. the party loaded the skull on to the ship and prepared to head north, towards One Stone.

The Search for the Relics

While traveling towards the next spirit mound, the ship was suddenly attacked by members of the Black Raven tribe, mounted on giant ravens. With a scream of “DEFILERS!!” their shaman summoned ancestral spirits that began flitting about her and attacking the party members with ghostly greataxes. Tribal warriors leaped onto the deck and began fighting recklessly. the party managed to survive, but the fight was hard won. They continued on to Morgur’s Mound, the long abandoned spirit mound of the Thunderbeast tribe. Resembling a gigantic reptilian beast when seen from the air and decorated with dragon bones, it was obvious that other treasure hunters before them had come and started to dig. they mounted their own excavation and after quite a few hours managed to unearth a large, gold covered fire giant tooth. When they removed it, the earth began to tremble as gigantic “thunder beast” skeletons clawed their way up out of the earth and attacked! Although they were huge, with giant club like skeletal tails, their ancient bones were no match for Knox’s battle hammer.

The Search for the Relics

Flying aboard the air ship and following Harshang’s rough map, the party journeyed to Great Wyrm Cavern, home of the Great Wyrm Tribe. They sent scouts ahead but while waiting for them, they encountered the Uthgardt woman they rescued from the ice spider den. She gruffly ordered them to follow her and marched into the large cave that served as the Great Wyrm’s home. She presented the head of Wormblod, the former chieftain (slain by the party outside the Temple of Annam it turns out) and assumed leadership of the trip. She told the party that she had journeyed to the Temple because she had been having dark visions of a large, shadowy winged creature consulting with a council of giants, and later with a pair of other giants and that great calamity and woe would result. She allowed the party to take a large shield hanging near the spirit mound, which was actually an ancient giant shield.

From there the party journeyed to Raven Rock, spirit mound of the Black Raven and Grey Wolf tribes. On the way, they encountered a group of Araockoa, who spotted the cultists aboard the ship and immediately attacked them. The party, in defense of the ship, fought back and slew the bird creatures..Upon arriving at Raven Rock, Giant ravens could be seen circling the area but although they seemed to watch them intently, they did not attack, and flew off after the party unearthed a giant sized ring and club buried underneath the two spirit mounds.

The Eye of Annam

The party explored the crack that the spiders came out of and found the creature’s larder. Surprisingly, they found an Uthgardt woman barely clinging to life. they revived her and although she obviously mistrusted them, she didn’t immediately attack. She grabbed a mining pick from another spider victim and slowly edged out of the room and disappeared. continuing to explore, they found a queen spider and dispatched it. Not having located the Oracle, they went back out to the sloped hallway and headed towards the end of it. That was when walls of stone suddenly appeared in the door ways of every side room and a gigantic boulder began rolling down the sloped hallway. The party ran for their lives, but the floor was slick with ice and they started slipping. Harshnag heroically managed to catch the boulder and started sliding down along with it, slowing it somewhat. Akari turned into a horse and started galloping down the hall as Knox jumped on to her back. Evrick bravefully morphed into a giant ape and attempted to assist Harshnag, but they both ended up going under the boulder. They survived, but were hurt. Carlin the gnome barely made it out of the hallway before the huge boulder was caught at the far end by a suddenly animating stone giant statue. The statue pushed the boulder back up the hall and into the far wall. The party returned to the main temple and began contemplating the mist filled arch. They eventually had Harshnag take the stone axe from the frost giant statue and use it to touch the frost rune. The arch way flashed white and they could suddenly see a room on the far side. They had finally found the Oracle.

Upon entering, they found six statues of giants holding lit lanterns. In the middle of a rune inscribed circle was the corpse of a cloud giant. When they approached, the ghost of the cloud giant appeared and greeted them. He told them that this room was the Eye of Annam, and that their questions would be answered. Each question would cause one of the lanterns to go out, and once they all went out, no more questions would be answered. However, the lanterns relight at dawn.

The party spent a couple of days asking questions and learned that the rampaging giants were not being brought to heel by the storm giants because King Hekaton had gone missing and even the divine oracle could not see where he was. The oracle also revealed that he was betrayed by two of his daughters, who covet his throne. The Oracle said that to find King Hekaton, the party must obtain a Conch of Teleportation, which would allow them to reach King Hekaton’s court in Maelstrom, and to root out the evil therein. The conchs are held by one of 6 scheming giant lords, and when the party asked where they could be found, it decreed that first they must retrieve giant artifiacts stolen by the Uthgardt barbarians and bring them back to the temple. Then, the path forward would be made clear.

Harshnag drew a rough map of the locations of various Uthgardt spirit mounds, where the Oracle said the giant relics had been buried, then announced he would stay and guard the temple. As the party stepped out of the temple, they discovered a large airship slowly descending towards the ridge where they stood and dropping a rope ladder. They climbed aboard and discovered a group of people dressed in dark robes and stylized dragon masks. They announced that Klauth, the great red wyrm of the north, had sent them as a gift to speed their travels and aid the party in their quest against the giants. Although they were leery about working with obvious Cult of the Dragon members, they decided that their desire to follow Klauth’s orders was greater than their desire to betray them and accepted their offer.

The Eye of annam

Using his considerable strength, Harshnag pushed open the doors to the temple, which had been coated by a thick layer of ice. Inside was a large chamber with a high, vaulted ceiling. In the middle was a gigantic statue of Annam the All Father, his face hidden by a worked stone hood. Surrounding him were smaller, but no less massive statues of each type of giant. Each one, with the exception of the statue of a frost giant, holding a weapon up to the statue of Annam. On the other side of the room was a giant arch filled with a soft glowing mist and engraved along the outside with glowing runes of mithril. Nothing appeared to be behind the arch except solid rock. The party investigated and Harshnag pointed out that he recognized one of the runes from his childhood, the giant run for Frost. When a party member touched it, the archway crackled with red lightning and the entire room was filled with pounding ice and freezing cold, nearly killing some of the party members. Leaving the arch alone for the time being, they decided to explore the rest of the temple. To the south were a pair of giant sized doors that, after breaking away the ice sealing them, opened into a feast hall. A huge fire pit i the middle of the room still burned, fed by a source of gas from within the mountain. As they spread out to explore, they were attacked to a rehmoraz, but managed to slay the beast. they discovered a charred giant skeleton at the far end, with a gigantic stone great axe lying nearby. This axe ended up fitting perfectly into the hands of the frost giant statue in the main temple area. Moving through a set of doors to the north, they found a sloped hallway with a large stone giant statue at one end and doors into what appeared to be guest rooms on either side. Evrick discovered a large, 5 foot crack in the wall of one and went to explore. He was attacked by giant ice spiders and just managed to run away. The spiders pursued, but were cut down by the rest of the party when they emerged into the larger sloped hall way.

Temple of the All Father

The party spotted a small campfire near the entrance of the temple so Akari, in the form of a small mouse, scampered down across the stone bridge to scout. She saw what appeared to be a pair of Uthgardt barbarians huddled around a campfire while a small white dragon snoozed nearby. After reporting this, the rest of the party decided to confront them directly and marched across the snow covered bridge. They were quickly spotted and the barbarians sent the dragon further into the temple while taking up positions in front of the entrance. Once the group closed close enough to speak, the barbarians told them to leave or die. Expectedly, this offer didn’t go down well and a fight errupted. the two barbarians didn’t fare too well and the party headed into the large tunnel that opened into the side of the mountain. Part way in, they heard the dragon screech…which turned out to be a signal as large stone blocks began to fall from the ceiling, closing off the tunnel in two places and seperating the party. Most of the group ran forward, deeper into the tunnel, but Klark ended up trapped between the blocks with Harshnag while Carlin ended up outside all together, having run backward. The ones in front took a minute while the warlock summoned a fire elemental then marched forward towards some pinpricks of torch lights in the distance. They soon discovered a group of Uthgardt barbarians that appeared to be trying to force open a massive, giant sized door at the end of the tunnel. A larger, more richly dressed barbarian declared that he was the chief of the Great Worm tribe and ordered his warriors to attack. The fight was brutal, but ultimately the party won out. Meanwhile, their dwarven companion found the mechanisms that lifted the stone blocks and now the party has assembled before the massive inner doors of the Temple of the All Father….within which, according to legend, resides the oracle known as the Eye of Annam.

Journey into the Spine of the World

After securing additional supplies at Mirabar, the party met with Harshnag and began the arduous journey into the Spine of the World mountains to the Temple of the All Father. As the climbed higher into the mountainous terrain, the weather became colder and colder. Harshnag strode unconcerned through the snow and Carlin, protected by her ring, was equally unaffected. The rest of the group huddled into their furs, or in the case of Akari’s tressym, buried itself into the furs of others, despite it’s nifty new sweater. On the second day, the weather turned ominous and the mountainsides started being battered by a full blizzard. The party desperately began searching for shelter from the fury of the storm, eventually locating a cave. They quickly learned that the cave was already occupied by a pair of huge, white furred bears and their cubs. The bears moved to defend their cubs and den, but the ranger and druid, with some help from the warlock’s psuedodragon, managed to calm the beasts and impart that they weren’t a threat. After waiting out the storm in the bear den, they journeyed on. Harshnag led them into a ravine passage through the mountains where they were ambushed by a party of goblins who threw enchanted icicles at them. they were also in league with a pair of gargoyles who breathed clouds of sand down on them, stinging their eyes. They managed to beat back the attackers despite the disadvantage of being in the ravine but as the last gargoyle creature was dying, it’s eyes suddenly flashed a glowing blue and a voice issued from it’s throat that definitely didn’t belong to the creature, proclaiming in loud, gravelly tones “I see you puny ones! We shall meet soon and all your plans will be for NAUGHT!”

Shaken but undettered, the party continued on through the ravine, eventually emerging on a the edge of a sheer cliff with a natural stone bridge leading a giant sized edifice on the other side. they had reached the Temple of the All Father.

The Road to Mirabar

The party headed north to Mirabar to turn The Weevil over to the authorities and collect the bounty. On the way, they were ambushed by the frost giant that had attacked Xantharls Keep, along with two more giants and half a dozen goblin archers. They were sorely pressed, with one of the druids down and the warlock close to it when suddenly a roaring frost giant in full plate and a white dragon helm came charging over the hill swinging a huge great axe and plowing into the attacking giants. With this new found help, the party rallied and managed to defeat the ambushers. The party’s suspicions were confirmed when the armored giant introduced himself as Harshnag the Grim, the very frost giant they had been searching the north for. They completed their trip to Mirabar, collected their reward, and are now preparing for the journey north into the snow and ice swept Spine of the World. Harshnag has offered to lead the party to the Temple of the All Father, rumored to house the Eye of Annam…an oracle from which one can seek wisdom from the All Father himself.

Xantharl's Keep

The party gauged the Stone Giants and ultimately decided that they were too much of a match for them. They tried determining what they were up, but they were not in the mood for conversation, hurling stones at the party if they persisted. They hid out for a bit and investigated the area after the Giants had left. They discovered that, had they not seen the farm house being dismantled, they would not have known it even existed. The Giants had completely scoured all evidence of it from the earth. That evening, they were visited by a very strange Stone Giant. He was covered in stone protrusions that looked like small animals and even a halfling on is back. He seemed dazed and not entirely cognizant of what was around him. He spoke of the wandering the dream and about his brothers seeking to return the dream to what it once was. He also seemed very interested in the dragon born Druid and mentioned adding her to his “collection” of stone entities stuck to his body. However, he was distracted by something else and ultimately wandered off. the party arrived in Xantharl’s Keep the next day, but before they could track down the wanted criminal they were searching for, the keep was attacked by a frost giant leading a small army of goblinoids. It quickly became apparent that the attack was a distraction to allow a group of bugbears to sneak into the keep and attempt to apprehend the dwarves bandit known as the Weevil. The party thwarted them, and captured the Weevil themselves. The keeps defenders managed to turn back the goblinoids and the frost giant escaped once his plan was thwarted.

One Night in Yartar

After arriving in Yartar, the party began searching for Harthal Zymorven. The soon learned that their best bet was to make contact with the local all female thieves guild, the Hand of Yartar to find him. They bribed a server at the Wink and Kiss tavern and were directed to a pair of women at a table in the corner. After negotiating with them and presenting their letter of recommendation from Tamalin Zoar of Calling Horns, they agreed to locate Harthal for them. She told them to meet her later that evening on the Grande Dame, a lavish riverboat casino. Dressed in their finest, the party boarded the ship and spent the evening dining and playing at the gaming tables before meeting with the Hand of Yartar contact. She told them that Harthal was in prison for murdering someone, and that his axe had fallen into the hands of a corrupt, and widely disliked guard captain named Tholzar Brenner. They decided to relieve the unsavory captain of the axe and departed the Grande Dame to get some rest. Upon awaking and getting food in the Inn’s common room, the party overheard a caravan driver relating a tail of seeing a large frost giant wearing a dragon skull as a helmet and carrying a gigantic axe. Realizing that the description matched that of Harshnag the Grim, they questioned the man and he said that he had seen the giant a week ago on the Long Road, north of Longsaddle, headed north. The party decided to finish up their business in Yartar and then head to Mirabar with the plan to head south down the Long Road to Xantharl’s Keep. They had information that a wanted criminal, The Weevil was hiding out in Xantharl Keep and they hope to find Harshnag along the way. They set out to the seedier section of Yartar and tracked down Captain Brenner, accompanied by 8 guardsman. They approached the group and the druid quickly cast Charm person on the captain, inviting him to have a drink and catch up. At a run down tavern, the warlock gave the suspicious guardsmen gold to buy drinks and while they were distracted, the druid cast hold person on Captain Brenner, grabbed the axe, and the party ran out the door…dropping a spell of darkness on the common room to cover their escape. With the axe cleverly secured, they used the harper teleportation circle to travel to the city of Mirabar and then headed south along the Long Road. On the second day of travel, they saw a column of smoke off the road and went to investigate. They discovered a small homestead that had been attacked by giants. The homesteads occupants had been killed and a group of 4 stone giants were apparently dismantling the house and barn stone by stone. While one of them slowly tore the house apart, another arranged the stones in artful, natural piles. A large pit had been dug and the other giants were placing all of the farmer’s possessions into the pit.
